Chronology

The story of how the young Donald Trump started his real estate business in the 1970s and 1980s in New York with the helping hand of the notorious lawyer Roy M. Cohn. Roger Stone, a longtime confidant of Donald Trump and Roy M. Cohn, acknowledged that Jeremy Strong’s portrayal of Cohn was “terribly accurate.” [From Trailer] Roy Cohn: Rule of Three: No matter what happens, take victory for granted and never admit defeat. It’s much more nuanced and complicated

The title “The Apprentice” refers to both Donald Trump’s television show and Trump’s relationship with his mentor Roy Cohn. The film is neither a review nor a glowing testimonial. The first half of the film takes place in 1973. Donald Trump is collecting rent from defaulting tenants. He and his father are being sued by the Justice Department for housing discrimination. Her lawyers are urging her to settle the lawsuit and move on.

But then Trump, 27, meets Roy Cohn

Cohn, a shadowy figure on the fringes of right-wing politics (he made his name as a senior adviser to Joseph McCarthy’s communist witch hunt), recommends that the Trumps take the initiative and file a countersuit against the federal government. Under Cohn’s guidance, the case is closed without admitting any wrongdoing. Cohn also guides Trump through the machinations of New York politics, helping him take over a shuttered Commodore Hotel, obtaining tax breaks from the city government and eventually turning the property into the Hyatt Hotel at Grand Central Station . Along the way, Cohn teaches the impressionable Trump his three rules: 1) attack, attack, attack, 2) deny everything, admit nothing, 3) no matter what actually happens, always claim victory. The second half of the film takes place in the early 1980s. Trump opens the tower of the same name.

But Cohn’s influence is waning over time

He believes that the casinos of Atlantic City will be his path to untold riches. And hire an author to write “The Art of the Deal.” At this point, he has completely mastered the art of self-promotion. At its core, The Apprentice is an origin story. Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi (“Holy Spider,” “Border”) and “Vanity Fair” author Gabriel Sherman make a compelling case that Trump was shaped, almost created, by Roy Cohn. Even as Trump’s star rises in the 1980s, Cohn falls from grace (loses his license for stealing from clients) and is ostracized. In the end, he dies of AIDS (although until his last breath he claimed to be suffering from liver cancer).

The acting is great

By the time The Art of the Deal hits theaters, Trump has come to the conclusion that Cohn’s three rules and his own fame were based on Trump’s ideas from the start. Director Abbasi also points to the strange confluence of factors that have aided Trump’s success: a ruthless version of capitalism and the successful are idolized; a legal system that can be easily manipulated by the wealthy to crush their opponents or delay their own day of reckoning (after its Cannes screening, the film received a cease and desist order from Trump’s lawyers) ; an American political system that has no idea how to impose restrictions on an individual acting according to Cohn’s three rules. In the role of Roy Cohn, Jeremy Strong (Kendall in the TV series “Succession”) is simply mesmerizing. He convincingly embodies Cohn’s inner contradictions: a lawyer who utterly despises the legal system, a Jew who professes anti-Semitism, a man who is not openly gay and who publicly disparages homosexuality at every opportunity.
